The Future As Disruption

The Future As Disruption was a group exhibition featuring works by Julieta Aranda, Sean Dack, Joan Banach, Jonah Freeman, Olalekan B. Jeyifous, Simone Leigh, Ann Lislegaard, Adam Pendleton, Mungo Thomson, and William Villalongo. Creating a wide array of works in sculpture, video, painting, and photography, these artists drew on tropes of science fiction to envision possible ramifications of the technological, social, psychological, and political conditions of our current historical moment, suggesting a future consisting of a daily existence quite distinct from our present one. The genre of science fiction, in all the mediums it presents in and forms it embodies, has long provided a rich and valuable resource for artists who seek to critique contemporary society with an eye to the future. Science fiction transports us beyond the horizon of our current technologies, limitations, and established ways of life in order to give us a new vision of the present concerning, in particular, today’s pressing political issues such as the environmental crisis, consumer culture, and life during wartime.
