Co-produced by Aaron Davis Hall, Greg Tate’s play My Darling Gremlin was presented at The Kitchen in May 1995. Butch Morris wrote original music for the production and conducted the five-piece ensemble that performed the score live. The play presented the story of three Black bohemian Los Angelinos who set out across the country on a bicycle built for three. Their journey leads them to the desert stronghold of an Afrocentric virtual reality cult near Las Vegas, where one of the three protagonists falls in love. The group must then decide to stay or go. As the characters grapple with this question, their personal and political agendas collide. The performance explored themes of African mysticism, gay and lesbian politics, paranoia, and conspiracy.
