On March 7 and 9, 1979, Arnie Zane and Bill T. Jones debuted Monkey Run Road at The Kitchen. Performing to music composed by Helen Thorington, the artists sat, rolled, and walked throughout the gallery. Lifts and other partnering segments were scattered throughout the work. The two also manipulated a large, rolling box—hidden inside was a light that shone from within at the conclusion of the piece. As the performance came to a close, Jones gave an abstract monologue, enumerating a long list of names and repeated references to “the end of the world.”
