An Exhibition

Artist(s): Troy Brauntuch

Date: March 31, 1979-April 21, 1979

From March 31–April 21, 1979, The Kitchen presented an exhibition of work by Troy Brauntuch, an artist primarily known for being a key member of what art historian and critic Douglas Crimp called the “Pictures” generation. At The Kitchen, Brauntuch exhibited characteristically ambiguous images of cropped and blown-up details from larger photographs—taking the viewer’s focus away from the content of the image and directing it at the image’s manipulation in its liberated context. The original pictures Brauntuch used were sometimes quite well-known, and his work both defamiliarized them and allowed viewers to impart their own knowledge and background in their engagement with his art.
